Announcing our mascot: the Riverhawk!

Dear Friends,
Our second year is off to an exciting start with 4 new staff members and 10 students! In the coming weeks, we will introduce you to these new faces and our new programming that help us continue the momentum from our first year.

First, though, I am thrilled to announce another milestone: our mascot, the Riverhawk!

The river hawk, also called osprey, is a species of hawk native to Virginia with habitats throughout the Commonwealth, including our own James River here in Richmond. As our mascot, the Riverhawk complements our vision for an education and programming focused on the wonder of the created world and the unique opportunities provided by our Richmond location.

We are proud to add to our unique school identity, and look forward to our students and families donning the Riverhawk in the weeks and years to come.

Go Riverhawks!

Partnership for the Future of Cardinal Newman Academy

Partnership for the Future of Cardinal Newman Academy

Cardinal Newman Academy is excited to announce a partnership with the Foundation for Catholic Education, a non-profit organization based in Sunapee, New Hampshire.

The mission of the Foundation is to support Catholic schools by providing financial contributions and strategic guidance to help new schools develop and grow. According to Victor Prieto, Founder and President of the Foundation for Catholic Education, Cardinal Newman Academy “has all the elements for future success: a clear and ambitious mission, an established market need, a diverse and dedicated Board of Directors, and a bright and committed faculty.”

Through this partnership, the Foundation will make a financial commitment to Cardinal Newman Academy, as well as provide strategic guidance to Cardinal Newman Academy and its Board of Directors. In addition, an ex officio member of the Foundation will join Cardinal Newman Academy’s Board of Directors. John O’Herron, President of Cardinal Newman Academy, believes “the business and financial management and experience of the Foundation and its Board will provide invaluable guidance as we continue to grow. Its financial commitment also helps us fulfill our mission to provide a rigorous and affordable high school education.”

This partnership initially includes a financial commitment for the 2018-19 school year, and both Cardinal Newman Academy and the Foundation hope to continue their relationship into the future, building on the foundation laid this inaugural year. The Foundation’s long-term vision includes assisting Cardinal Newman Academy with the cost of facilities, including locating and securing its future permanent home.

Easter Message

Easter Message

Friends,

As we enter the Sacred Triduum, it is our sincere hope and prayer that your experience of these high holy days is in communion with Our Lord. As Catholics, we are blessed with these rich and intricate liturgies, some of the most ancient in the Church, to lead us to the realization that “We are an Easter people and hallelujah is our song.” (St. John Paul II)

When the hour came, He took his place at table with the apostles. He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for, I tell you, I shall not eat it [again] until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you [that] from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.”

And likewise the cup after they had eaten saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you. Luke 22:14-20

Sincerely,

New Athletics Offerings in 2018-19

New Athletics Offerings in 2018-19

Friends,

I’m thrilled to announce another milestone in our growth: the start of our athletic program! Next year, we will field our first athletic teams in Track and Cross Country.

We are just as excited that Rick Wagenaar, former Head Coach of Track and Cross Country at the University of Richmond and several other Virginia schools, is joining the CNA community to coach our teams.

In addition to fielding Track and Cross Country, our students will also have the opportunity to play basketball and soccer next year with Richmond Spirit Athletics . Richmond Spirit Athletics is a Christian organization that provides home-schooled students the opportunity to participate in organized interscholastic sports activities with other schools in the Richmond, Virginia area. Partnering with RSA will allow our students to compete in team sports until we field our own teams, and we are grateful for their partnership.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been busy working with a graphic designer on our mascot for next year’s teams, and I look forward to announcing that in the near future!
Sincerely,

Eileen M. Lapington, Ph.D.

Thank you, Donors for a successful Christmas Challenge Campaign!

Thank you, Donors for a successful Christmas Challenge Campaign!

You did it! First, you helped us surpass our initial Christmas Challenge goal of $10,000. You then put us over the top of our $20,000 goal. Now, thanks to a matching $5,000 gift from a local Richmond business, you brought the Christmas Challenge total to $26,796!

Thanks to your generosity, we are able to fund the field supplies needed to grow our Natural History program, the production costs of our theater arts performances, or the resources needed for our student-founded extra-curricular clubs.

Our entire community is grateful for your support this Christmas, and will keep all of our supporters in prayer this year. We are excited for the year ahead!
Sincerely,

John P. O’Herron

Cardinal Newman Academy

p.s. Save the Date ! For the third year in a row, Cardinal Newman Academy will gather on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4, to feed the homeless of our community. Details to come next week.

CNA in Full Swing! Photo Gallery – First Two Weeks

Friends,
I cannot believe we are already nearing the end of the second week of school here at CNA!

We began our year with the faculty, students, and members of the CNA community praying the rosary and dedicating our school year to the patronage of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, and Mrs. Pyle ended our first week with cupcakes to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Mary.

Our students have begun accumulating their specimen collections in Natural History and learning to identify local plants and trees.

My Latin students have even begun to meet and study together at the public library! The faculty are enjoying the collegial atmosphere that the small size and our weekly lunch conference affords them, and they are looking forward to a great year ahead.

I invite you to take a look inside CNA by viewing a slideshow of our first two weeks (click photo below).
